Faint not Christian trials may Sadden

Part i
Faint not, Christian; trials may
Sadden thy appointed way;
Many troubles may befall,
many cares for patience call.

Stricken by the hand of God,
Thou mayest feel his chastening rod;
Sickness, pain, and deep distress,
In this earthly wilderness.

Joys may vanish as a dream,
Life a flowerless desert seem;
Storms may sweep across thy path,
Trials seem effects of wrath.

Arduous duties must be done,
Victories over sin be won,
Pomp must be renounced, and pride,
Passion checked, and self denied.

Men thy motives may mistake,
Hate thee for thy Master’s sake;
Often make thy heart to bleed,
Mock thy prayers and scorn thy creed.

Yet believer, never faint,
Breath to God thy sad complaint;
God has goodness, wisdom, strength,
Rest and peace shall come at length.

Part ii
Faint not Christian; in thy woes
God can give thee sweet repose;
If the wicked thee distress,
God is mightier to bless.

Faint not, if thy foes be strong,
Faint not, if the strife be long;
Faint not, though thy way be rude,
Through a cheerless solitude.

If thy weak and wayward heart
Ever from thy God depart;
Mourn thy sinful, shameful, fall,
And for promised mercy call.

Humbly all thy sins confess;
Plead the Saviour’s righteousness;
Beg of God restoring grace,
And at once renew thy race.

Whatsoe’er thy sorrows be,
Christ hath suffered more for thee;
Saints have borne the torturing rack,
Martyrs triumphed at the stake.

Some have learned in chains to sing,
Praise to Christ, their Lord and King;
Some have left at duty’s call,
Friends, possessions, country, all.

Faint not; God who knows thy state,
Will not leave thee desolate;
He, who for his people cares,
Feels thy sorrows, hears thy prayers.

Part iii
Faint not Christian; Christ will keep
Those who he hath made his sheep;
Faint not, heaven and earth combine
Thee to serve; for God is thine.

Sorrows gathered like a flood
Work together for thy good;
Whatsoever may befall,
God can make thee conquer all.

Not a sparrow dies, but he
Hath ordained that it should be;
He, who sees the sparrow dead,
Counts the hairs upon thy head.

Cast thy burdens on the Lord,
He will always help afford;
And with equal love and power,
Blessings on thy head will shower.

Jesus is the Lord of all,
Jesus hears when thou dost call;
Earth obeys thy Lord’s commands,
Life and death are in his hands.

He who bore for thee the cross,
Will not send thee hurtful loss;
He, who saved thy soul from hell,
Orders all, and all is well.

Faint not, when the storm is past,
Sunny joys shall come at last:
Never cease to love and praise;
Thou shall yet see happy days.
